The majority of animals in our care are older or have chronic medical or behavior issues.  They will live out their time in our sanctuary with all the love and care we  can provide.
At the current time, we are unable to take in any animals from private homes.

About Our Sanctuary
                               Information and Philosophies
SouthEast Sugar Gliders Rescue and Sanctuary is operated by SouthEast Companion Animal Rescue & Education Services, Inc., a  non-profit corporation.  We are located in South Florida.

We believe that every glider deserves a happy and healthy life and that education is the way to accomplish that goal.  It is by educating people about the care these animals require and making them feel passionate about providing that excellent level of care that we can do the most good.
Veterinary care is vital
to ensuring physical health.       Each glider receives a well
visit within 14 days of arrival at our sanctary.  Their first 30 days are spent in quarantine to prevent spreading of illness to our other sanctuary residents.  While in quarantine, their behavior is observed, enrichment items selected and they are allowed to settle in.  Once quarantine and any medical treatments are completed,  the glider can move into one of our glider rooms.
While we, as a private shelter, are exempt from USDA licensing, we strive to uphold all standards of care required for USDA licensees.  We do our best to offer more to our gliders than the minimal requirements...we offer them happiness and love.
We do not breed any animals.  Female sugar gliders cannot be spayed, but all males are neutered.
Veterinary care is provided by Dr. Melissa Mueller of Planet Pet Animal Hospital.  Along with her staff of Erin, Kara and Misty, Dr. Mueller treats the many medical issues we encounter with tremendous skill and compassion.  We trust her with our animals' lives without hesitation.
Nutrition is another key component to health.  We continue to change what we feed based on new information learned.  We've found that nutrition deficiency is the most common issue with rescued gliders.  A variety of foods are served fresh each night.

              Environmental enrichment is not a luxury...it's a
necessity.  The gliders that come to us receive not only the needed
physical care, but their emotional needs are also looked after. We believe that a
glider who is mentally stimulated has a reduced rate of stress and illness. From the
toys in their cages to time out to frolic and explore in our glider playrooms, enrichment is a priority.

Kate Keller has been working in animal rescue for over 15 years.  She's  interned at the Brevard Zoo aviary and,for the last 7 years, has operated a sugar glider rescue and sanctuary.  In 2008, she founded SouthEast Sugar Gliders, Inc which earned its 501(c)(3) tax exempt status the following year.  It broadened its focus from sugar gliders to all types of pets and  became SouthEast Companion Animal Rescue & Education Services, Inc, (SECARES) in 2010.  In addition to her duties as President of SECARES, Kate continues to serve as Director of SouthEast Sugar Gliders Rescue and Sanctuary where she continues her daily hands-on care of the sugar gliders.  Kate volunteers with both the Disaster Animal Response Team (DART) and the Florida State Animal Rescue Coalition (FLSARC).
SouthEast Sugar Gliders Rescue and Sanctuary networks with rescues and sanctuaries across the country.  Whether it's to share information or to arrange transportation or shelter for an animal, we believe that a strong rescue network can accomplish what no individual can.
